Young Carers in school

In September 2017 Hampton College were awarded Gold for supporting young carers in schools (YCiS). This is a great achievement and we are thankful to Staff, Students, Governors and the Carers Trust for all their support.

Hampton College is committed to meeting the needs of young carers and young adult carers so that they can attend and enjoy school in the same way as other pupils/students and achieve their potential.

Young carers are children and young people who often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. (Carers Trust, 2012)

The school has a designated Young Carers' School Leads with responsibility for young carers and their families.

  • Operational Lead for young carers: Mrs Lynda Johnson
  • Senior Leadership Team Lead for young carers: Miss Alex Macfarlane

The school will only share information about young carers with professionals and agencies on a need to know basis in order to support pupils and their families.

The school actively seeks feedback and ideas from young carers and their families to shape and improve support.

The school will look to use Pupil Premium funding to minimise any barriers to education and learning experienced by eligible young carers.

The school has an effective referral system and strong partnership in place with the school nurse and the local young carers' service.
