Business Studies

If you are looking for a subject which will challenge you, stimulate you and open up new avenues, then Business Studies could be for you! Business Studies complements many other courses and is attractive to employers as the skills learnt are useful in many different careers such as marketing, accountancy, sales and consultancy to name a few. It also enables budding entrepreneurs to capitalise on their ‘business brains’ and put their ideas into action by learning how to set up their own business.

The Business Studies department at Hampton College is a strong, dedicated and effective team, providing an interactive learning environment with varied teaching and learning strategies. We currently offer a number of different Business Studies courses to meet the varying needs of our students. These include:

  • GCSE Business Studies
  • V Cert Level 2 Business and Enterprise
  • AS Business Studies
  • BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business
  • A2 Business Studies
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business

Business Studies is an inspiring subject which allows pupils to relate their classroom theory and concepts to the real world. It is a dynamic subject which continually changes within the business environment. The course aims to blend academic rigour with the development of key skills such as team working, problems solving, research and evaluation.

Key topics within the Business Studies syllabus include Marketing, Human Resources, Operations, Finance and Business Organisations. The broad range of subject content allows pupil to experience all aspects of business and apply them to businesses in the 21st century.

In order to take our learning outside the classroom, educational trips are an important part of Business Studies – so we can see Business in Action!

The department has run a number of different trips this year including:

  • Business Studies Revision Workshops in Birmingham for AS & A2 students
  • Sub-express visit for Year 12 BTEC students

Tycoons in Schools Competition:  A national enterprise competition spearheaded by Peter Jones CBE, entrepreneur and star of Dragons’ Den, which gives young people the chance to run their own business. Students in Years 8, 10 and 11 submitted their business plans to Peter Jones in a bid for a startup loan to begin running their business enterprises after October half term.

An extremely successful team of Year 8 11 Business Studies students competed in the Tycoons in Schools competition and having successfully received their loan from Peter Jones and traded under their business name of 'Indulge'.   They did incredibly well trading their homemade bath bombs in a variety of different locations across the community and local Christmas trade fairs.   They worked phenomenally hard and ended up 2nd in the country on their key stage and had the opportunity to visit Buckingham Palace to meet Peter Jones and the Duke of York.   Congratulations to Brogan Lawrence, Hani Mustafa and Oliver Sainsbury.

Hampton College Quiz Night. Year 12 Business studies students organised the Hampton College Quiz night again this in November. The event was run by the Year 12 BTEC Business Studies students who performed extremely well throughout the night, providing an excellent evening with fantastic prizes on offer. The night was a great success and we would like to thank all students, parents and staff who supported the event.

The Tenner Challenge. Another really successful year of over 30 teams of budding entrepreneurs across the school battling it out all week in attempt to turn their initial £10 investment into as much profit as possible. The students were ‘open for business’ during the first term and traded over a week to make as much money as possible, all students keep the profits as an incentive.   This years candidates produced a variety of ideas from hand crafts to luxury cupcakes.   Well done to all those who participated from years 7-10.

V-Cert Enterprise project  As part of their coursework our year 11 students participated in teams to run a business whereby they plan, create and deliver a plan of action to obtain a business loan from the department.   This years teams worked extremely collaboratively in business including car washing, candle making, hot chocolate business, phone accessory business and creative dream catcher producer.
