Technology

The vision of the Design Technology Department is to provide a safe and supportive environment in which all students are encouraged to be as creative as possible. With a commitment to achievement by students, we aim to use the resources, ideas and 21st century technologies available to provide an inspirational learning environment.

All rooms are purpose built, containing all of the machinery and equipment that you would expect of a modern, forward looking school. All students have an opportunity to experience all of the different Technology areas on a regular basis, in order to maximise their skills and then make an informed decision about their GCSE choices.


Food Technology
We have two Food Technology classrooms both of which are equipped with electric ovens and hobs so that students experience a range of cooking methods. We have some very talented chefs, who get to showcase their talents in the Futurechef competition that we participate in each year


Textiles
The Textiles room has the ability to create professionally finished, quality proucts. It is important that each student has the ability to demonstrate their level of competence, so there are twenty sewing machines to facilitate this. The room also has two overlockers, a T-shirt heatpress, six computers to do design work, a large screenprinter, a large cutting table and CAD/CAM embroidery equipment.


Product Design
It is important that students are making things in the workshop as much as possible, which is why we choose projects that enable this to happen. It is important that students consider the design of artefacts, but all of the most creative inventors have learnt by their mistakes in the workshop. Students should be allowed to fail. We have two workshops, each with a slightly different emphasis in terms of the tools and equipment that they have.

Workshop 1 – Containing five workbenches, each with four vices, this workshop also has two lathes, two linishers, two pillar drills, four fretsaws, a bagpress capable of applying pressure over a large area (used for bending materials), a stripheater and a morticer.

Workshop 2 – Also contains 20 workstations, although metal-working vices are fitted. It also has a low-melt casting furnace, soldering stations, jewellery making tools, an enamelling kiln, MIG welding equipment, a linisher, two pillar drills and a vacuum-former.

During their school career all students will be trained how to use each of these, depending on whether they have chosen to follow a GCSE in Product Design.

CAD/CAM/Graphics

All students are encouraged to produce high quality products using compliant materials. To help them achieve this, we have a class set of computers connected to a laser A3 colour printer, a CAMM1 vinyl and card cutter, a PUMA vinyl and card cutter, an A2 lasercutter, a sublimation printer, a mug-press and an A1 Boxford router.
